Math shows up everywhere in our classroom, and our children rarely realize they are even doing it. At ECLA, early math is not a worksheet. It is a dice game, a song, and a story, all working together to build number sense.
Our children are introduced to numbers, shapes, patterns, measurement, and comparison through play. Story time becomes a counting exercise when we count characters on the page. Music turns into math when children count out jumping jacks to the beat.
During playtime, children sort blocks by size, count how many they have stacked, and compare who has more or less. These moments look like play because they are play, but they also build the foundation for real math skills.
One favorite activity this month was tossing dice and calling out the number. Children practiced recognizing numbers, then used those same numbers for simple addition and subtraction.
This hands on approach helps children truly understand what a number means. That understanding of quantity and concept is what will carry them into more formal math later on.
